Marine General urges us to use our heads

If you haven’t yet read General Anthony Zinni’s interview on Salon.com, I have to urge you to take a look at it. General Zinni – a Vietnam and Gulf War veteran and former commander of Central Command – makes one basic plea in the interview: use your heads. Don’t send American servicemembers to their deaths without knowing what you are doing.

It’s too bad the Bush administration doesn’t seem to be listening to the people who understand what the potential costs of this war may be. All the of academics and lawyers in the White House who clamor for war were curiously absent during the Vietnam War, yet they are more than happy to commit our children to combat.

On the flip side of that coin is an all-star (no pun intended) lineup of flag-rank officers, including General Zinni, Wesley Clark (former Supreme Allied Commander in Europe), Brent Scowcroft, and others, all of whom urge caution.

These folks aren’t peaceniks. Why, then, do they all urge caution in this war with Iraq? Read Zinni’s interview. He makes a good run-down of the potential risks and the potential costs of this war.

If you think we should go to war with Iraq today, you should seriously consider enlisting, or having your children enlist if you are too old. If you are too busy, or have other things to do, or don’t think it’s worth your life or your kid’s life to put a stop to the big bad bogeyman Saddam, you need to consider whether or not it’s worth another soldier’s life.
